Canadian fans make 800 mile drive to Coke 600 in unique camper

- Fans from across the country are expected to attend the Coca-Cola 600, but did you know the race is also known around the world?

Charlotte Motor Speedway officials tell FOX 46 Charlotte there are fans from Japan and New Zealand expected to attend the race. FOX 46’s Brett Baldeck found a NASCAR fan who made a more than 800 mile drive just to camp at the speedway.

Among the sea of campers inside Charlotte Motor Speedway sits one that stands out. Just like the cars on the track it has its own custom paint job.

“I do a lot of drawing and oil painting and water colors,” said Charlene Lapensee.

Lapensee’s canvas is the family motor home. The masterpiece on wheels has been traveling to at least 5 races per year since the 2011 Daytona 500. The home away from home puts in some miles. Charlene and her husband live just outside Toronto, Canada.

“This trip especially we saw a lot of people taking pictures and posting it on to the Facebook page they saw on the front of the RV,” said Lapensee.

It’s an eye catching, one of a kind camper, that once looked like all the others in the infield.

“My husband said we should start painting on it the places that we go. So when we started going to the races he was like we should do something about NASCAR and then he’s like how do you figure out how to fit 43 cars on it,” said Lapensee.

So Charlene airbrushed each teams gas can instead. Among the art, you’ll also find portraits. Famous names like Petty have stopped by to sign off on a job well done. Even the president of NASCAR couldn’t help but see for himself.

“He actually said that this is the kind of thing that makes his job worth while,” said Lapensee.

Soon Charlene’s job will become busy once again. The Canadian couple has bought a new camper,
meaning there is the potential for a whole new plain white canvas.

“I would like to Yes. I will leave that up to my husband,” said Charlene.

Charlene and her husband hope to find a location where they can put their original camper on display for NASCAR fans.

An interesting note about Canada, there is a NASCAR sanctioned racing series in that country, but Charlene says she and her husband have been hooked on American version of NASCAR since attending the Daytona 500 back in 2011.
