Car goes through active railroad crossing

- Surprising video straight out of Mount Holly, NC.

FOX 46 Charlotte viewer Brian Greene submitted this video to us.  He took it yesterday for his friend, who was the engineer of the train.

Take a look at the active railroad crossing.  The car comes to complete stop, then decides to go for it.  The train wasn't too far behind either!

The driver is lucky to have made it through without a scratch.

We reached out to Mount Holly Police and sent them the video.

Chief Don Roper watched the video and released this statement to us:

"We advise all motorists that it is a violation when they fail to obey a railroad signal.  NC State law requires that vehicles stop not less than 15 feet from the rails when a device or signal gives warning of the approach of a train.  Drivers and pedestrians are prohibited from driving through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier that is closed or closing.  Those seen violating this statute will be charged with an infraction which could result in a fine and court costs of nearly $300.  Should anyone be involved in an accident while avoiding a crossing signal or gate, they could be held criminally responsible.

As you can see from this video, the driver that passed under the gate saved very little time.  The risk to the driver, passengers, and railroad workers is definitely not worth the risk.  We ask that drivers use common sense, and consider safety first."

Chief Roper also stated that this was an isolated event and the last fatal car/train accident happened in 2001.
