Caught On Camera: Suspect accused of stealing from about 50 cars

- The search is on in Union County after investigators say a man stole from about 50 unlocked cars Saturday morning in Indian Trail.

Security footage from a home captured the suspect in the act. It appears on camera like a neighbor was just passing through a front yard, but the man casually walking through the Sandalwood Neighborhood of Indian Trail is actually the suspect in about 50 car larcenies.

Security footage shows him climb in an unlocked mini van. He starts rummaging through the front glove compartment just as the sun came up Saturday around 6 a.m.

"It's kinda crazy he has the nerves to do all of that in broad daylight," said Ashlyn Gillard.

Gillard's family captured the incident outside their house with a security camera. It was installed less than a year ago.

"We really didn't think we would need them, but I am glad we did have them," said Gillard.

The cameras are already paying off in the investigation. A nearly crystal clear picture of the suspect was handed off to the Union County Sheriff's Office. Investigators say the suspect stole plenty of valuables from each car, including a gun.

"He was looking for small stuff to get rid of, for drugs," said one neighbor.

Some neighbors considering themselves lucky because there was nothing of value was inside their car, but the incident still teaching a valuable lesson.

"Do the right thing and keep it locked," said on neighbor.

Investigators say the common theme in the nearly 50 cars was they were all unlocked. Anyone who recognizes the suspect should call the Union County Sheriff's Office.
