CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Charlotte City Council is set to have a hearing Monday on express toll lanes coming to Interstate 485.
The proposed toll lanes would cover 17 miles of I-485 from I-77 to Independence Highway. Existing lanes on the roadway won't be built, instead an express toll lane will be constructed in each direction in the median.
A free lane would also be added between Rea Road and Providence Road. As part of the project, Ballantyne Commons Parkway would be widened. A new exit would also be created at Weddington Road in Matthews in addition to improvements to the John Street exit.
The cost for the project comes in at nearly $300 million. Most of the project will be funded by federal and state dollars.
City leads are considering spending more than $1 million for bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
Construction is expected to being in 2019.
