CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - There is potential for the Charlotte-metro area to see its first major winter storm of the season this weekend. A storm system will move in from the west bringing precipitation into our area Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The system will form in Texas on Friday and will likely move into the area Saturday evening as rain.
As temperatures drop overnight into Sunday morning the rain could begin to fall as freezing rain, sleet or snow. The precipitation would linger into Sunday afternoon before clearing out briefly. Another round of wintry precipitation is possible through Monday afternoon.
The amount of wintry precipitation we could get is unknown as of right now but the potential for wintry mix/snow is between 30 to 50 percent.
This will likely be more of a snow event in the mountains and foothills as temperatures will be cold enough to sustain snow from the onset of the system.
A lot can and will change with this forecast so keep checking back in with FOX 46 Charlotte both on-air and online for the very latest on this system.
