Charlotte-Douglas Airport expansion opens Wednesday

- The Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is now elevating passenger experiences as they prepare to fly out to their destination. A new concourse began operations on Wednesday.

Up, up, and away!

"I couldn't be happier, it's an exciting day."

Phase 1 of the concourse A addition officially opened to passengers on Wednesday. The $200 million project increases gate capacity by 10 percent which airport officials said was needed.

"We have pent up demand form all out carriers, including American, so this is something we have been waiting patiently for and the day has arrived."

"it's nine new gates used by five local carriers that serve our local market. SouthWest, Jet Blue, Air Cananda."

State-of-the-art upgrades include smart glass to help control terminal temperatires along with a bathroom area for pets. Passengers can now eat and drink local with NoDa brewing and stay charged.

"Every hold room seat will ave a charging station."

Last year, 45.9 million passengers traveled through Charlotte-Douglas. The new concourse A is just the beginning of a $2.5 billion initiative to improve the airport, which means the construction will stick around.

"Next five to seven years, you'll see more."

"It represents strong growth and demand in the market and now there will be new capacity for airlines to continue growing."

More gate capacity often means more selection when you go to book a flight.
