DALLAS, N.C. (FOX 46) - Sunday marks one week since investigators said a man crashed his vehicle into a restaurant, killing two of his family members.
Roger Self is currently behind bars at Central Prison in Raleigh.
Officers said his daughter and daughter-in-law died in the tragic crash after being struck while sitting inside the business.
Venture Church, where the Self family has attended for years, stepped up to offer the community ways to heal from this horrific incident by hosting several events for the public. The family's pastor told Fox 46 Charlotte that the suspect suffers from mental illness.
The latest included a brief tribute to family during the church's annual Spring Festival. Thousands were expected to attend.
Church leaders talked about the Self family and prayed for them with everyone at the event.
Roger Self is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Authorities said he intentionally drove his vehicle into the Surf & Turf Restaurant on North 14th Street in Bessemer City. The wreck killed his daughter, Katelyn Self, who was a Gaston County Sheriff's Deputy, and his daughter-in-law, Amanda Self, who was an emergency room nurse at CaroMont Health.
Three more family members were injured.
