SALISBURY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Salisbury woman was robbed and left for dead. Now, her own grandson is facing charges for the crime.
62-year-old Melanie Clark was found dead inside her home after investigators say she went into cardiac arrest.
"I just don't get it," said Robert Williams, a close friend of the victim. "Tore my world up, you know."
Williams once dated Melanie and used to live inside the home with her.
"She called me every week and I come by every week to see her and see how she's doing," Williams said. "Because me and her were real close-- best friends."
Now, seeing the home he once lived in surrounded by crime scene tape is surreal.
"She didn't deserve to die like that," Williams said.
Rowan County Sheriff's Deputies were called to Melanie's homw on Dulin Ave. shortly after midnight Monday. She hadn't been heard from since Sunday.
"Got a phone call and they told me Josh had killed her," Williams said. "And I was in disbelief-- it didn't sound right."
Josh Clark is Melanie's 25-year-old grandson. He lives nearby and is now facing first degree murder charges for the crime.
"She cared about people and stuff like that," said Williams. "And he done robbed her a couple times in this house and she still took him back in and forgave him,"
While this isn't the first time he's been accused of taking from Melanie, it is the first time he's been accused of harming her.
"I just can't figure out why he did that," Williams said. "She didn't bother anyone-- she was a real good person and always laughed-- she worked hard and didn't ask anyone for anything-- she was an independent woman."
Williams hopes for healing for those who knew and loved the woman who meant so much to him.
"I just want people to know she is going to be missed," he said. "She was a good friend and this tore my world up, finding out about this. I want people to pray for the family."
