CMPD: 1 killed, 1 hospitalized in wreck following rash of armed robberies

- Charges are pending against one person in connection to a string of armed robberies that ended in a crash overnight, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The driver of the stolen car, who was killed in the crash, has been identified as Rontavious Shawn Clark, 25. The passenger is Danneil Elijah Hughes, 23.

The robberies all happened within one hour. The first began at 3:03 a.m. in the 600 block of E. 8th Street. The victim told officers that two unknown armed suspects demanded his vehicle. The two suspects fled the area in the stolen 2004 Lexus SUV.

At 3:44 a.m. a second armed robbery was reported at the 7-Eleven at 5343 Monroe Road. The clerk said an unknown man entered the store and brandished a weapon demanding property from the business. The suspect was able to flee the scene with stolen items in the stolen vehicle that was being driven by the second suspect.

The third robbery occurred at 4:05 a.m. at the Circle K located at 9100 Monroe Road. The clerk told officers that a suspect had entered the store and robbed him at gunpoint.

As detectives discovered that all three reported armed robberies were related, another robbery connected to the suspects was reported around 4:15 a.m. at the Sam's Mart at 668 W. John Street in Matthews.

The store clerk said Hughes came into the store and demanded money while pointing a handgun at him. When the suspect left the store, he reportedly got into a silver Lexus SUV being driven by Clark.

At 4:36 a.m. the same SUV was involved in a crash in Lancaster County, SC. Clark was killed, and Hughes was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Upon further investigation, troopers with SC Highway Patrol determined that the car was the same one stolen from Charlotte and used in several reported armed robberies in Charlotte and Matthews.

Hughes has been charged with armed robbery, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued from the Mecklenburg County Magistrate's Office.
