CMPD arrest suspect in northeast Charlotte stabbing

- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have charged a man for the stabbing murder of Darrell Bernard Cureton.

James Edward Leaks has been charged with the murder of Cureton, 49, according to CMPD.

Officers said Cureton got into an altercation with Leaks when the stabbing occurred. 

It happened at 4:49 p.m. Tuesday, August 16 in the 300 block of Plymouth Street in the Metro Division. Upon arrival, police said they found Cureton suffering from an apparent stab wound. Cureton was transported to CMC where he was pronounced dead. 

Police said they are not looking for additional suspects at this time. 

Detectives with the Homicide/ADW Unit canvassed the area Tuesday to determine whether there were any witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search also responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  

CMPD said the investigation is in its early stages. Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective Hefner is the lead detective assigned to the case.
