CMPD make arrest in hit-and-run on N. Tryon Street

- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested a man Friday in connection to a hit-and-run earlier this week. 

Derrick Charles Bell, 36, is charged with felony hit-and-run. 

Bell was taken into custody Friday, June 3 after police spotted a vehicle matching the description in connection to the hit-and-run. 

Bell is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. 

Officers said at 1:23 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, Robert Douglas Churchill, 37, was attempting to cross the 4000 block of N. Tryon Street towards Palace Auto Sales/Popeye's when he was struck by a vehicle. 

The vehicle, a silver/grey Pontiac Montana, left the scene without calling police or rendering aid. The suspect vehicle proceeded towards Sugar Creek Road and cut through the parking lot of Rite Aid on N. Tryon Street. 

The vehicle then exited onto E. Sugar Creek Road towards The Plaza. 

The suspect driving the Pontiac was described as a white or Hispanic man in his 30's. The suspect vehicle will have driver-side damage to the bumper area, damage to the left front head-lamp and missing the driver's side (left hand) mirror. 

At the time of the collision, Churchill was not in a marked crosswalk, according to police.

Churchill is in stable condition in the ICU at CMC-Main. A GoFundMe page has been set up.
