CMPD officer charged with DWI in Avery County

- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was arrested over he weekend in Avery County and charged with driving while impaired.

According to CMPD, Officer Tyler Kishpaugh was taken into custody by North Carolina State Highway Patrol near Banner Elk. 

Officer Kishpaugh, who is assigned to the Steele Creek Division, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave, officials said.

“I am disappointed that a member of our department has fallen short of our organization’s high standards," said CMPD Chief Kerr Putney. "I expect the men and women of this department will be held accountable when they violate the law no matter where it occurs.”

 He has been employed by CMPD since July 25, 2001.  This incident occurred while Officer Kishpaugh was off duty and driving his personal vehicle.
