CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A Charlotte Mecklenburg police officer has been charged after he was accused of touching a woman inappropriately at a nightclub over the weekend.
On Tuesday, Jan. 29, police department officials said that Officer Michael Santiago was charged with one count of sexual battery.
On Sunday around 1:30 a.m. a woman told police she had been touched inappropriately at the Roxbury nightclub at 116 W. 5th Street.
Additional off-duty CMPD officers were near the club patrolling and recognized Officer Santiago. Following an investigation, and interviews with the victim and witnesses, Santiago was determined to be the suspect.
Santiago came in to CMPD Headquarters on Tuesday and was served with a summons. He has not been formally arrested, but he has been placed on unpaid leave.
CMPD says a seperate investigation will be conducted to determine if Santiago violated any of their internal policies.
