CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was dragged more than 100 yards by a suspect's SUV during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning in north Charlotte. Two people are in custody and facing multiple charges, police said.
The incident happened around 2:25 a.m. Tuesday, June 12 in the 1800 block of Maribel Avenue.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, three officers had observed a suspicious vehicle with two young men inside parked on the side of the street. Police said this same vehicle, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, had been parked in almost this exact location about a month ago when officers were called to the area regarding a person who was threatening people with a rifle.
Police said during that incident the two suspects, identified as Deveno Sturgis, 21, and Zevaguis Sturgis, 24, were arrested after two stolen firearms and a small amount of crack cocaine were located inside of their vehicle.
On Tuesday morning, officers saw this same exact vehicle and duo parked on the side of the street. The officers approached the SUV and began speaking to the men at which time one of the officers observed some drugs inside the vehicle.
When the officers began to detain them, the passenger attempted to run away but was eventually apprehended after actively resisting arrest and struggling with one of the officers. At the same time, the driver of the SUV began reaching down towards the passenger-side floorboard. The officer talking to him, knowing that there had been two stolen guns inside of this same vehicle just a few weeks before, reached into the vehicle and grabbed the suspect’s arms to prevent him from being able to grab whatever item he was trying to retrieve.
Police said the encounter escalated even further when the suspect was able to start the SUV and began driving off with the officer partially trapped inside. After traveling more than 100 yards, the suspect drove the vehicle off the roadway and into a tree, causing the SUV to flip over.
The CMPD officer involved in the wreck was transported to Presbyterian Hospital for minor injuries to his hand, leg, and nose.
Deveno Sturgis is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer causing Injury, reckless driving, operate a motor vehicle while fleeing law enforcement, possession of schedule II narcotic, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon (gun), and resisting arrest.
