Arrest made in shooting on Central Avenue in Plaza-Midwood

- An arrest has been made in an overnight shooting that left one person seriously injured in Plaza Midwood, according to CMPD. 

Officials say the suspect, James Simmons, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.  He's charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the 1200 block of Central Ave. near Hawthorne Ln. in east Charlotte.

Officers were called to the area for two people in a fight. Upon arrival, they found a person in a furniture store parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers located the second person who had been involved in the fight. Police say he was not shot but was taken to the hospital with injuries caused during the fight. 

Simmons was also arrested in 2015 and charged with assault on a female. He is being held in the custody of Mecklenburg County officials.
