CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has announced that they are canceling classes for Thursday and Friday as Hurricane Florence moves toward the coast.
The announcement came just after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. School officials say they've taken measures "to protect the safety of students, staff, families and community members."
In addition to classes being canceled., all CMS athletic practices, games and events are also canceled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Before and after school programs, extracurricular activities, and field trips scheduled for Sept. 13 or Sept. 14 are also canceled.
Make-up days will be designated at a later time, according to school officials. They will continue to update families, students, staff and the community through phone-call messages, the CMS website, CMS social media, emails and the CMS mobile app.
Chester County schools will also be closed Thursday and Friday. Cabarrus, Kannapolis, Stanly, Rowan, Union and Lancaster County Schools have announced that they will be closed Friday.
Anson County schools will be closed only on Thursday as of now.
