CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - A Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus driver has been suspended without pay after a resident caught the person driving erratically on camera.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 14 in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood.
Joe Scarborough told FOX 46 Charlotte he watched through his rear view mirror as the CMS bus driver made moves to pass his car and the truck in front of him. He started to record as the bus crossed the double yellow line into the other side of the road.
“You’re putting the bus driver in danger, you are putting me and my vehicle in danger, you are putting the other vehicles in danger,” Scarborough said. “You are putting a lot of people in danger. All for the wrong move.”
The video shows a truck pulled over on the side of the road. The truck was previously in front of Scarborough when the bus started to cross the yellow lines, nearly hitting another vehicle in the opposite direction. That’s why Scarborough said the bus was not trying to move over or dodge the truck.
“It’s a real busy area, so there nowhere for no body to go,” Scarborough said.
The next red flag in the video shows the CMS bus driver making a speedy right handed turn at the intersection of Hawthorne Lane and Central Avenue without stopping. The sign said no turn on red.
“It was right on the verge of yellow turning red, but still a bus that big carrying students, if they were carrying students,” Scarborough said. “It should approach the intersection a lot more cautiously.”
This incident remains under investigation.
CMS released this statement to FOX 46 Charlotte:
"CMS Transportation is committed to the safe transport of students on school buses. We appreciate being made aware of this situation and are taking immediate steps to investigate and address the matter.
No students were on board. The driver has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation."
