"ConeWeed" raises more than $20,000 for local families, more organizations help out

- "Cone Weed" is giving back to the community. After weeks of fundraising, the Huntersville Fire Department has raised more than $20,000 that will go to several local families this Christmas.

"We’re proud to announce that our #ConeWeed fundraising made well over $20,000 – all of which has already been put to work assisting local families in need with a FULL Christmas," said Bill Suthard with the Huntersville Fire Department.

With the help of community donations and HopeMatch.org,  more than 100 local families will receive food and gifts this holiday season.

Food Lion has also agreed to provide up to 500 bags of food as part of their #FoodLionFeeds program, according to the fire department. Huntersville FD will be working with local food pantries to arrange transfer of this donated food.

The fire department now plans to host a "#ConeWeedGivesBack" event, which will take place Sunday Dec. 10 from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at Huntersville Fire Station 2 on Beatties Ford Rd.

"This is where we will put into action everything we've done thus far, and in unique ways. It will be a fantastic event to bring local families and members of our community together to support those in need," Sutherland said.

Attendees will be able to donate new items, assemble bicycles and hygiene kits that will be donated, make kindness rocks and pack food bags for delivery.

Caterpillar Ministries, Cookies For Kids' Cancer, HopeMatch.org, Hope House Foundation, Food Lion, Barnette Elementary PTOSmoke and Go Catering Services, The Vinyl Pi, Huntersville United Methodist Church, Loaves & Fishes Charlotte Mecklenburg, and many more organizations will be joining the event.
