CHARLOTTE, NC - The Carolina Theatre at Belk Place has been vacant since 1972. The Foundation for the Carolinas has a plan to put the Uptown building back in business.
The Foundation is planning and fundraising for the renovation project.
The goal is to raise $39.8 million. So far, $36.6 million has been raised.
Construction on the project is expected to begin this summer.
The renovated building will be connected with the Foundation's current headquarters.
It's set to be the centerpiece of Belk Place, a group of civic amenities in Uptown.
The plan is to host major speakers, panel discussions, and feature arts and entertainment.
The theater is expected to open in 2018.
Plans also could include a 20-story, 200 room hotel that would be located above the theater.
