Construction worker rescued after falling 12ft into concrete pit

A man is said to be OK after falling approximately 12 feet into a concrete pit Wednesday afternoon in Gastonia.

The incident happened at 3:29 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10 at a construction site at 128 W. Main Avenue.

Authorities said the construction worker fell after the floor below him collapsed.

According to the Gastonia Fire Department, the 59-year-old worker fell into a hole leading into the basement of the old Lawyers building.

The Gastonia Fire Department's Rescue Team used a ladder truck and harnessing devices to lower a stokes basket into the hole.

Rescuers in the hole packaged the patient and secured him in a stokes basket to be raised out of danger.

The man was transported to the hospital around 3:50 p.m. with non-life threatening injuries.
