Couple charged in opium poppy bust

- An elderly couple is facing charges after they were found to be growing opium poppies on their property, authorities said.

Xee Yang and Cha Yang, both 61, of Taylorsville, were arrested Wednesday in Alexander County. The couple had two poppy fields growing behind their home on Cloyde Moore Lane, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office. Roughly 2,000 poppy plants were seized. 

The two are charged with trafficking, manufacture, and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance. They were being held in the Alexander County Jail under $500,000 bond each.
