CORNELIUS, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Three children, eight adults, and some dogs and cats have been displaced following a fire early Monday morning at a local Cornelius condo complex, according to the Huntersville Fire Department.
The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Monday, March 18 at the Admirals Quarters Condos located at 18808 Nautical Drive.
Many residents say when the fire broke out they were still sleeping. One woman spoke with FOX 46 Charlotte and said she was unaware her home was on fire.
“The building that was actually on fire was on the opposite wall of my condo. I think if I would have went back to sleep then I don’t know if I would have made it out," said resident, Maranda Kimbell.
Huntersville Fire said the large fire started on the third floor deck of one of the units. Fire and smoke spread quickly, damaging several other homes.
By sunrise Monday, neighbors were allowed back inside to gather whatever belongings they could. Others stopped by to offer help.
“I came over to see if there was anything I could do. I live in the next condo over so I had a view of the flames last night," said neighbor, Nancy Donlon.
A gas company, an electric company and a CATS bus for evacuees were called to the scene. Luckily, no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
