Crowd attacks North Carolina police, firefighters with fireworks

- Authorities said they had to use pepper-spray balls to gain control over a crowd who were shooting fireworks at officers and firefighters on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at the Pisgah View Apartments in Asheville. Police said they were called to assist firefighters from the Asheville Fire Department who were being assaulted with “pyrotechnic mortars and roman candles.”

Upon arrival, officers were attacked with the same explosive devices. Responding officers were able to deploy pepper-spray balls to disperse the crowd.

No injuries were reported but the explosives damaged several police and fire vehicles.

Four people have been arrested.

Angela Nichole Marko, 34, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official; possession with intent to manufacture, sell, distribute Schedule II controlled substance; possession of marijuana up to 1/2 ounce; resisting public officers

James Lee Dontae, 19, is charged with resisting public officers, and possession of marijuana.

Jonathan Andrew Mejia and Giovannia Alexis Mejia, both 19, were charged with resisting public officers.
