Daily sweeps for weapons, drugs keeps Mecklenburg County Courthouse safe

- Another day, another discovery outside the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

"This is a whole box of razors," says Cpl. Clark Myers with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

That's the point of these daily sweeps to look for things not allowed inside the courthouse.

"People don't realize we do these extra measures to get this stuff off the property because you may have a weapon laid out of some sort and we don't want kids with their parents to get the items," said Deputy R. Helms.

The sweeps around the building are done at least four times a day. The most common things they find could cause serious harm.

To quantify just how much contraband is taken from inside and outside the courthouse, Deputy Helms tells FOX 46 it takes about a month to fill a garbage barrel.

The deputies understand how much of a hassle some of the safety measures can be and want the public to know safety is their top priority.
