Hurricane preparedness: Do you have what you need for the storm?

- Shopping for a weather event can be overwhelming. So FOX 46 Charlotte reached out to public safety officials to ask what is recommended for families to have at home.

If you and your family were caught in a dangerous storm, would you be ready? As Florence is approaching the Carolinas' coast, you should start preparing for potentially catastrophic weather. 

The category four hurricane is expected to cause massive flooding and power outages. The following items are recommended for you to buy ahead of Hurricane Florence: 

  • Water for 3 days (one gallon/person/day) 
  • Non-perishable food for 3 days
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery-powered radio + extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Whistle
  • Filter mask (or cotton t-shirt)
  • Flashlight + extra batteries
  • Emergency blanket
  • Cell phone charger
  • Moist towelettes
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Duct tape
  • Garbage bags
  • Plastic ties
  • Work gloves
  • Important information
