2 dead, 1 seriously injured during crash in southwest Charlotte

- Two people were killed in a crash involving a tractor trailer and a Volkswagen Jetta in southwest Charlotte.

The accident happened just before 1 p.m. in the 11100 block of Steele Creek Road near Westinghouse Commons Drive.

When Medic and Charlotte Fire Department personnel arrived on scene they pronounced the driver of the Volkswagen, Ignacio Cordova, 32, and the passenger, a 14-year-old boy, dead.

The back seat passenger was an 10-year-old girl. She was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to CMPD.

The driver of the tractor trailer was Larry Patrick, 63. He was uninjured in the accident.

According to investigators, the evidence on the road as well as witness statements indicated that the tractor trailer was traveling north when the Jetta suddenly swerved into its lane resulting in a collision. Witnesses stated that the Jetta was passing other vehicles prior to the crash.

This section of Steele Creek Rd. is not marked for passing in either direction.

The crash is still under investigation to determine if excessive speed was a factor for the Jetta. It was not a factor for the tractor trailer.

We are working to get more details. Keep refreshing as new information becomes available.

This story originally stated the age of the girl as 11-years-old. It has been corrected for accuracy purposes.
