Driver in Hickory hit, killed man on moped, then fled

- The Hickory Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating the driver who struck and killed a man while riding on his moped early Monday morning. 

The wreck happened at 5:41 a.m. Monday, August 21 near the intersection of Startown Road and 23rd Street Drive SE. 

Officers said the victim, Ricky James Yelton, 54, of Hickory, was struck by a vehicle after he wrecked his moped. He was pronounced dead on scene. 

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a red a2007 Daewoo Lacetti, 2007 Suzuki Forenza or 2007 Chevy Optra with damage to the front driver’s side. Police said all of these vehicles were made as station wagons, hatchbacks, or sedans. The vehicle should have damage to the front driver’s side.

The Hickory Police Department is continuing this investigation and asks anyone who may have witnessed this incident to please contact MPO D. Frye at 828-328-5551.
