Elderly man found dead in Blowing Rock one day after reported missing

- A missing elderly man was found dead off of an embankment Friday evening according to Blowing Rock police.

Milton J. Hayes, 72, was found dead on Greenhill Rd ‚Äčaround 5:16 p.m.

Blowing Rock Police officers arrived to Greenhill Rd. in responds to reports of a fall. They found the body of Hayes which was reported missing by Gaston County Police department on Nov. 15 at 9:00 a.m.  

Medical examiners indicate that he may have died 10 to 12 hours before being found by a local resident. 

The vehicle driven by Hayes was located on a heavily wooded private drive off George Blagg Lane in Blowing Rock. The maroon Chevy HHR owned by Hayes was found by Blowing Rock police during the continued search on Sunday morning. 

The vehicle had run through a split rail fence and was stuck off the drive. The vehicle was approximately a quarter mile from where the Mr. Hayes was found on Friday evening. 

Police believe that Hayes may have been disoriented and confused when he ran off the driveway and left the safety of his vehicle during an ice storm on Thursday night. 

Blowing Rock Police are working with the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of Mr. Hayes’s death.
