MOORESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - NC Fish and Wildlife officers tell FOX 46 Charlotte they are conducting a "recovery mission" on Lake Norman after a drowning Sunday evening.
The first calls came in to first responders around 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6 for someone who went under water and never resurfaced. The area being searched is behind a group of homes on High Hill Drive in Mooresville.
Officers said four friends rented a boat from Queens Landing in Mooresville. Two people reportedly jumped in the water to swim. They said one man never came back up. Alcohol was not a factor.
Life jackets were on the boat but none of the swimmers were wearing them, police said.
Several boats from multiple agencies across Iredell County were deployed into the water from 6 p.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday. They came back around 8:20 a.m. Monday to continue the search. Crews said Monday's weather will make the search more difficult but shouldn't slow the search process.
Neighbors tell FOX 46 a drowning happened right around the corner last year where a diver died in the search process.
NC Fish and Wildlife officers said they're now using a ROB robot to locate the body. Family is out of town and is expected to be on scene later in the day.
