MATTHEWS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - In November of 1959, Leon Levine opened a store on Central Avenue in Charlotte; he’d call it Family Dollar. That one store grew to thousands nationwide.
Today, some are wondering how long this family business will stay in business after Dollar Tree, which purchased Family Dollar in 2015, announced they’re closing the headquarters in Matthews.
“It’s just crazy,” said Bethany Stewart, “like Family Dollar is too, like, where are they moving the headquarters? this seems like the best place for it.”
In a statement Dollar Tree released today, the company revealed plans to consolidate. 700 employees will have the option to relocate to Virginia; the remaining 200 will be out of a job.
“No! No,” said Stewart, a Matthews resident. “That’s not cool, and let me tell you why. A lot of people in Charlotte need jobs. Like, Charlotte is a developing city.”
“Relocating is not only going to affect the community but also family members,” said Deborah Worrell.
Matthews Mayor Paul Bailey released a statement today saying he’s disappointed in Dollar Tree’s decision, adding in part, “as one of the largest employers in town, family dollar has been an important part of Matthews for many years. Their employees are part of our community, and we have reached out to our Mecklenburg County partners to determine how they can best assist them during this transition.”
While headquarters will officially close next fall, Family Dollar’s distribution center will remain open.
