CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Mold on the sofa, growing in a coat closet and even along the baseboards. Wilfredo Vazquez showed FOX 46 Charlotte the moldy mess inside his apartment at McAlpine Ridge in the East Forest neighborhood of Charlotte.
Conditions are so bad that his one-month-old daughter and one-year-old son were forced to move out.
"Before they got any sicker we just sent them away in the mean time," said Vazquez.
The kids are gone, but the problem persists. Apartment management is aware of the issue and sent Vazquez a letter telling him to leave his air conditioning on more often to keep the moisture level down.
"Our bills are already high. We just paid like a $600 bill so we aren't paying that," said Vazquez.
When FOX 46 Charlotte stopped by the apartment was 77°. Vazquez and his wife were never told the apartment needed to be at a certain temperature when they moved in.
"They didn't say anything actually. I was with my wife they just told her to make sure the structure and everything is fine, no damage or nothing and that is it," said Vazquez.
FOX 46 Charlotte stopped by the leasing office to get results, but management didn't want to tell their side of the story telling us they aren't allowed to comment on apartments or resident complaints.
Vazquez hopes to get results of his own by moving to a new apartment by the end of the summer so he can be reunited with his family.
"Everybody loves their kids, I wanna be with my kids, but I want to make sure their health is important first you know," said Vazquez.
FOX 46 Charlotte plans to reach out to the corporate management to get more answers.
