CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - It was a very windy day at Carowinds on Friday, and the Flint Hill Fire Department chief tells FOX 46 those winds likely contributed to the spread of a massive fire that damaged at least 10 cars in the parking lot.
Smoke was rising as high as the rollercoasters at Carowinds as cars were scorched the afternoon June 22, in the amusement park’s parking lot.
Many driving through the south parking lot were feeling the heat, and kids at the water park couldn’t help but get out of the water to see a thick cloud of smoke exhaling towards them.
Carowinds says 10 cars caught fire mid-Friday afternoon and while no one was injured, the cause of this fire has not been released.
"We saw the smoke start,” Joe Carlson told FOX 46.
He had parked his car in the same lot where the fire spread, but he was one of the lucky ones, parked just a bit away from the flames.
"It kept getting worse and worse. Heard the sirens,” he said.
It was a frantic scene as many didn't know what exactly was happening, but the chaos could be seen well away from the park.
For the people directly affected, they're left wondering how and why this happened?
As for the cause of the fire, the chief says there's nothing that points to it being set by someone. It was likely a mechanical issue from one vehicle. He believes most of the cars are at a total loss.
