FOX 46 helps slow down speeders in north Charlotte neighborhood

- FOX 46 Charlotte is helping catch speed demons as we continue to get results.

A neighbor in a northeast Charlotte neighborhood sent us video of deputies lined up along Craighead Road.

Drivers have been caught going up to nearly 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in a residential area on Craighead Road near North Tryon.

"Cars just fly up and down the street like there's no tomorrow," said Resident Gary Marion.  "It's a safety issue."

Speed demons are being stopped in their tracks.

"Somebody needs to do something about it," Marion said.

And with the help of FOX 46 Charlotte Getting Results, something is being done.

"This morning for about an hour, we brought two of our radar units down and set up an operation tailored to speeding," said Captain Stephen Morin with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

"I thought it was great," said Marion.

Marion wants four stop signs total put up at two different intersections on Craighead Road.

"Four stop signs," he said.  "That's all I'm asking for."

This, after many accidents in his neighborhood.  He's also nearly been nearly rear-ended turning into his driveway on several occasions.

"People are concerned," he said.  "Cars come from North Tryon and fly down the road."

FOX 46 Charlotte recently took Gary to talk to the Charlotte Department of Transportation to express his concerns.  FOX 46 got results and got police to crack down on speeders in the neighborhood.

"In about an hour, we stopped about 20 cars and issued citations for speeding," said Captain Morin.

Some drivers were even caught going close to 20 miles per hour over the 35 mile per hour speed limit.

"Out of the 20 or so citations, the average was about ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit," said Morin.  "So 45 miles per hour-- we clocked some at 50-51 miles per hour."

While Gary says there's still more work that should be done, he agrees having the boys in blue out in his neighborhood is definitely helping.

"The enforcement is helping, everything is helping," said Marion.  "Thanks FOX 46 Charlotte for helping get results on West Craighead Road in Charlotte, North Carolina."

According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, drivers can expect to see them back out on West Craighead Road periodically.

FOX 46 made a call to the Charlotte Department of Transportation to find out more about putting up stop signs, they told us the side streets don't have enough traffic to consider doing that.
