GASTON COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Animal Care and Enforcement-Animal Shelter has had three confirmed cases of feline panleukopenia (feline distemper) in the past week.
Officials said this deadly disease is very contagious and results in many cat deaths.
To prevent further spread of the infection in the shelter, the shelter announced they will not be accepting any new cats or kittens into the facility and will suspend the adoption of cats from the facility for the next two weeks until October 3.
"This is a voluntary action that is necessary to prevent spread of the disease and additional deaths of cats. We appreciate the public’s support in this effort," Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement said.
