Gastonia group-home under multiple state investigations

- A Gastonia group-home for children with behavioral issues is under investigation by multiple state agencies.

FOX 46 Charlotte obtained a report from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services that reads, Children's Advocacy Network, Inc. is under investigation for "neglect or dependency."

FOX 46 Charlotte uncovered that Children's Advocacy Network is also under investigation by the North Carolina Department of Labor for, "2 open wage complaint cases."

Multiple employees of Children's Advocacy Network (current and former) told FOX 46 Charlotte they had not been paid in over a month."

"Management has constantly maintained it is due to a lack of funds," one former employee said. 

FOX 46 Charlotte obtained a company letter that said, in part, "we simply don't have the resources to issue paychecks."

The issue, Children's Advocacy Network receives Medicaid funds -- and people are wondering where's the money?

One teenage girl, who told FOX 46 she stayed at the group home for three months, said there was never enough funding to take care of basic needs.

"It was just unacceptable," the teenage girl said. "I wouldn't let my dog live in those conditions."

The child said the home had issues with maggots, bed bugs, mold and more. Multiple employees complained about the same issues to FOX 46 Charlotte. All said the company couldn't afford to take care of the problems.

One employee shared a photo with FOX 46 of what appeared to be a bed bug on a pillow.

The same child said the company couldn't afford to keep the heat on during the winter months.

FOX 46 Charlotte reached out to C.A.N. multiple times and was forwarded this statement...

While we support any employee advocating for their rights and those of our consumers, no one takes that role more importantly than ourselves. The personal sacrifices that we have made as management, are and have been because of the belief in trying do what is right. When companies go through times of difficulty, there will always be individuals who will use that opportunity to advance their own agenda.
