CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - How would you get out alive if you were to find yourself stuck in the middle of an active shooter situation?
CMPD officer Johnathan Frisk teaches Active Shooter Survival to businesses, churches and more.
"This active shooter, they are a coward with a gun," Frisk said. "We take the gun away, what do they have? Just a coward."
Frisk said he's seen an increase in people wanting to take his classes with an increase in mass shootings. Most recently, the Florida School Shootings.
Frisk breaks down the A.B.C.'S to Get Out Alive -- Avoid, Barricade, Counter and Survive.
Avoid, teaches people to have some sort of exit plan.
Barricade explains a number of ways to "lock out" an active shooter. One way, is using a common ethernet cable to tie a door handle shut.
Counter explains why, if you have no other choice, you need to take some sort of action -- even if it means grabbing the shooter's gun. It might save your life and others.
"Approaching the intruder, looking him or her in the eye and knowing I have to approach them as soon as possible is definitely scary," Molly Nighland said.
Nighland works at Florence Cittendon Services, a residential facility for at-risk woman that took CMPD's Active Shooter Survival class in April.
Survive teaches a number of first-aid techniques. The two-hour presentation provides a hands-on approach.
