Harris Teeter VIC card program can help schools in need

- Whip out your grocery list. This is something you'll want to write down. Next time you go through the check-out line; you could be raising big bucks for your local schools.

"It's something we're already doing, so why not bring everybody together to help this cause," said Jody Pino.

She thinks about her two daughters every time she shops. When you buy Harris Teeter brands, part of the profits goes to kids' education. You can add up to five schools on your Harris Teeter Vic Card.

"It's so simple. It's not even coming out of peoples' pockets. It's something that everybody can do to contribute and make a huge difference."

Myers Park High School got 14 grand last year through the program, followed by Elon Park Elementary in Ballantyne. But some title one schools got nothing.

"Those kids deserve it just like any of our kids do."

Jody is working to get results for those low-income schools. She's inviting people to add them to their Vic Cards.

"It's simple, you go to your Harris Teeter and tell them to add those schools to your card, you go on your account online and add those schools to your card. It's really very basic and can make a huge impact."

So next time you shop, think of your local schools.

"My kids are very lucky to have the things that they have and have access to the resources they have and I think it's eye-opening for them to see that other kids don't necessarily have the same things."
