CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - As if the area wasn't experiencing enough construction, the popular Hawthorne bridge separating Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood has officially closed.
"It's incredibly frustrating. It blocks off a main access road for us," one resident living in the area said.
"We have a lot of friends living in Plaza Midwood, music lessons and all the stuff for my kids and everything in that area will be an inconvenience," said Cassie Hatch.
"We have a lot of people that come from Plaza Midwood and that's going to cut down a lot of our business," said Alexis Mejia, the G.M. of Sabor Latin Street Grill.
The bridge will not be available for thru traffic until March of 2019 while a streetcar and tracks are being installed as part of the CityLynx Gold Line project.
Drivers are being asked to shift traffic to East 7th street and Central until the project is complete.
