CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46) - Noise, detours and construction dust is what people in the Elizabeth neighborhood have learned to live with for the last 2 months and half for a project that was only supposed to be a month long.
"Other than little boys fascinated by the dump trucks and everything, you don't want to sit there and listen to this noise and have a drink or pizza," General Manager at Hawthorne’s NY Pizza & Bar Nicholas Link said.
General manager at Hawthorne’s NY Pizza & Bar Nicholas Link tells me they've seen a dip in customers since the construction started.
"The biggest hit has been lunch. We have a lot of people coming from the hospital and from uptown but people don't have that extra time to drive around and find a parking space, get out and back," Link said.
Due to the road closures, people just assume the stores are closed and these businesses have had to put signs up letting customer know they are still open.
One of bigger complaints is the detours which are sending drivers through these quiet neighborhoods and making the area very dangerous.
"They fly down those little streets and endanger the neighbors and that is the problem," Elizabeth resident Lucinda Lucas said.
The good news, 7th street is opening up on Monday and the flow of traffic won't have to be rerouted through these smaller roads.
"It will bring the life back to us," Link said.
The bad news, this project is far from over. The bridge that goes over Independence Boulevard is going to be closed in the next couple of months, closing another lifeline to these business.
"That may be a game changer for that side of the town," Cajun Queen Employee Alex Cason said.
Starting on Monday, Hawthrone Lane between Park Drive and 7th Street will remain close until October
and Hawthorne Lane between 7th Street and 8th Street will close for a week.
"We'll see. I'm optimistic but at the same time realistic. Hopefully they've learned from what happened here and they'll try and stay on track," Link said.
The project will continue for the next year, until the bridge over Independence Boulevard is replaced. This construction is for utility work as part of CityLYNX Gold Line Phase 2 construction.
