CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - At least one person has been charged by police after a group of three men were caught shooting at a computer router in a park near two schools in northeast Charlotte in the Mallard Creek community. The incident prompted the schools to go on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.
Simon Sultan Ghirmai, 24, was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, discharging a firearm in the city, and carrying concealed gun.
CMPD officers responded to Mallard Creek Community Park on Johnston Oehler Road in reference to a 'shots fired' call at 1:03 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21.
As a precaution, Mallard Creek High School and Parkside Elementary School located along Johnston Oehler Road were placed on lockdown due to police and K-9 activity near by.
CMPD tells FOX 46 Charlotte the group of three men were conducting 'target practice' on a computer router in the parking lot of Mallard Creek Community Park, which is near both schools. An official from the high school attempted to confront the three men and that's when the group got spooked and ran from the scene.
Officers along with the K-9 Unit located the two men near the reported shooting. Police said they detained those two men and located a firearm at the scene. Another man is still on the run.
"Mistakes can happen, and it could have cost one of us our kids," Jermaine Webster, a parent, said about the 'target practice.'
