Hundreds attend vigil for teen slain at east Charlotte QT

- The football field at Sedgefield Middle School was packed Wednesday night with hundreds of friends and family to remember 17-year-old Daquan Shannon.

The Shannon family says the death of Daquan is taking an emotional toll. They hope someone comes forward with information that can lead to the arrest of the killer.

The hundreds of candles that lit the night sky at Sedgefield Middle School helped comfort the Shannon family. They tell FOX 46 Charlotte they have already heard hundreds of stories this week about how Daquan made an impact on the Charlotte community.

“It has given us great joy, but at the end of the day we are still hurting,” said Daquan’s cousin, Mario Black, who is also a community activist.

Daquan hoped to go to college after graduating from Garinger High School but Wednesday night hundreds of family and friends returned to his middle school football field to pay their respects.

“This is the first place I thought we could do his candlelight vigil because he played sports and football was his first love,” said Black

“He put a smile on everybody’s face. Teachers, parents, anybody,” said friend, Tavion Burch.

Burch became friends with Daquan when they attended Sedgefield Middle together. Burch showed up Wednesday night wearing a special shirt to honor his friend.

“If you see anybody with this on you know that he touched their heart,” said Burch.

The friend everyone describes as a caring soul was taken away Sunday just after midnight. Daquan was shot while walking to a QT on Central Avenue in East Charlotte.

No arrests have been made and now family and friends asking for help to bring the killer to justice.
“He will look out for anybody and you’ll look out for him,” said Burch.

There was a moment of silence at Garinger High School Wednesday to honor Daquan Shannon.

Anyone who may have information on this case as always should call Crimestoppers.
