CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - Ricardo Mata, the owner of a Spanish education program in Charlotte schools and daycares who has been charged with sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl, is in the United States illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ICE tells Fox 46 Charlotte on March 17, 2018, after CMPD arrested Mata for indecent liberties with a child, officers assigned to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office 287(g) program lodged a detainer on Mata, who according to ICE, is a citizen and national of Venezuela.
Mata, the owner of PlaySpanish, has been teaching Spanish in Charlotte daycares and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for 21 years, according to the PlaySpanish website.
The parents of a 7-year old girl claim Mata sexually assaulted their daughter at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Dilworth in July 2017 during a PlaySpanish summer camp at the church.
According to CMPD, the girl’s parents did not tell police about the alleged assault until February 2018.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said Mata last served with them as a volunteer in December 2017, and his volunteer status with the school district has been revoked.
Fox 46 Charlotte wanted to find out if Mata’s illegal status would show up on a CMS volunteer background check?
The school district did not specifically answer that question, but they did point us to the volunteer page for CMS.
According to the CMS website, there are different types of volunteers. Some are supervised meaning they only have access to students under the supervision of a CMS employee.
Other volunteers are unsupervised, and those people are required to give their Social Security numbers for screening before they can become a volunteer.
Below is the full statement from ICE on Mata's immigration status:
On March 17, 2018, officers assigned to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office 287(g) program lodged a detainer on Ricardo Luis Mata-Borjas, 52, a citizen and national of Venezuela, illegally present in the U.S., at the Mecklenburg County Jail after his arrest by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police for indecent liberties with a child and lewd and lascivious acts.
U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) takes seriously its obligation to enforce the nation’s immigration laws, and the enforcement actions ICE employs are intended to accomplish this fairly and efficiently. ICE focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security.
