Is the post office throwing away your first-class mail?

- The United States Postal Service might be throwing out your mail. A FOX 46 Charlotte viewer asked us to take action after discovering mail in the dumpster at the USPS store located at 8326 Pineville Matthew Rd. in Charlotte.

The viewer sent FOX 46 Charlotte a video of what he saw in the trash, which appeared to be more than just junk mail.

"The Post Office is literally throwing out people's mail," the viewer said in the video.

FOX 46 Charlotte went to the scene on Tuesday, Aug. 8 and discovered mail throughout the dumpster.

USPS said it's allowed to throw out undeliverable marketing mail, what some might call "junk mail", but withing minutes of siftng through the rubbage, FOX 46 Charlotte uncovered a first-class envelope.

"Well, let's get that one back," a postal worker who was observing FOX 46 Charlotte said. "That one could have slipped through."

The postal worker held the envelope up to the light and there appeared to be a check inside the envelope.

FOX 46 Charlotte wanted to know for sure so it went to the return address listed on the first-class mail. The sender confirms it was a check inside for $226.13 that was supposed to be delivered to the business that cleans her pool. She said all addresses on the envelope were correct and she has not had an issue with mailing to that address before.

"If they're throwing away bills and people aren't getting them then that can cause a lot of problems for people," one person in the USPS shopping center said.

FOX 46 Charlotte asked the North Carolina communications coordinator for USPS if it keeps track of reported, lost mail and if so, what are the numbers for the state and the office in question. He did not answer any of our questions, instead forwarding us a statement that read, "Thank you for sharing this information. The matter has been turned over to our Office of Inspector General and we are no longer able to comment.

When FOX 46 Charlotte pointed out the piece of first-class mail, the nearby employee pulled it out of the trash can and said he would have it returned to the sender.

The sender told FOX 46 Charlotte, the following day, that she had not heard from the post office or seen her mail.

This story, raising the question, if FOX 46 Charlotte can uncover first-class mail in a post office dumpster within minutes, what other mail is missing or being thrown out?
