Is your home in a floodzone? Find out.

- FOX 46 is finding out what's being done to prevent flooding from creeks and greenways from getting into your home as massive Hurricane Florence approaches.

The Doral Apartments are in a flood-prone neighborhood in east Charlotte. They were hit hard by Tropical Storm Fay about 10 years ago, and many neighbors have not forgotten the impact.

“It was a scary night people waking up three or four in the morning, the whole neighborhood was flooded and people were having to evacuate, literally wading through the water or kind of swimming out of their apartments,” one neighbor told FOX 46.

Luckily for people living in Mecklenburg County, a new interactive map shows what homes are in flood zones and have the highest risk of flood damage. The map shows that the apartments could be in trouble again if Hurricane Florence brings high amounts of rain.

FOX 46 Charlotte used the map to check on other flood-prone spots.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway has turned into a raging river during bad storms in the past, causing problems for homeowners near Freedom Park.

“Our creeks can handle an inch or two of rain per hour but if you have three hours of that it's going to overflow,” a Mecklenburg County official said.

That's why Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water is using heavy equipment to clear debris from the creeks ahead of the storm.

Video taken Tuesday morning shows crews removing branches along the Mallard Creek Greenway in north Charlotte.

That debris was right next to a sewer pipe, so they had to get the tree limbs out of the way to prevent debris build-up during the storm that could put the pipe at risk of rupturing.

“Lucky enough we got it before the rain gets here because once the rain starts we won't go into the water, it's just too dangerous for our crews,” a worker told us.
