Judge releases police video of ambush, fatal shooting at CMPD headquarters

- Police videos of a fatal shooting where officers were ambushed outside Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police headquarters by a wanted murder suspect in January have been released. 

The shooting happened the night of January 11 when officers preparing for a briefing in the CMPD parking lot were ambushed by 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett. Bennett at the time wa wanted in connection to the killing of his girlfriend, 24-year-old Brittany White, which had taken place earlier that day.

As police were preparing for the briefing, Bennett opened fire multiple times, striking officer Casey Shue in the leg. 

Several officers, including officer Jeffrey Zederbaum and officer Jared Decker, returned fire. Bennett was shot and taken to Carolinas Medical enter where he was later pronounced dead. He had 14 gunshot wounds and two bullet grazes, according to autopsy results. 

A Superior Court Judge granted a media request authorizing the Charlotte –Mecklenburg Police Department to release body-worn camera video footage from the incident. The three videos released Tuesday show police fatally shoot Bennett.

In one video, you can see him approach the unsuspecting officers. A split second later, shots ring out and and officers can be seen ducking for cover.

On Monday, April 3, the District Attorney's Office stated that no charges would be filed against the officers involved.
