K-9s just like any other pet when not in the line of duty

- There's two sides to Kane the K-9: The loveable side and the side you hope you never encounter.

"He can flip a light switch and can bite you one minute and even mister bad guy rub your belly as soon as he's done," said Sgt. Tristan Furr.

Sgt. Furr's relationship and his family's relationship with Kane goes back nearly five years with Kane being one of four K-9s the Stanly Co. Sheriff's Office owns.

"They are a tool but when they go home with that handler they are a pet," said Sheriff George T. Burris.

Sgt. Furr and the sheriff's office wants to do away with the stigma that K-9's are just vicious attack dogs.

"When he sees my daughter he turns into a different dog," Sgt. Furr said.

And no matter how intense Kane's day can be when he's on the clock once he's home, he's like any other pet.
