Kitten from Cabarrus County tests positive for rabies

- A kitten from Cabarrus County has tested positive for rabies, according to Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement. The 2-month-old kitten was taken to The Pet Hospital in Bessemer City on Thursday, July 26 after falling ill. 

The kitten was impounded and processed for rabies testing and was sent to the North Carolina Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official results confirmed the small animal tested positive. 

The Gaston County Department of Public Health and Human Services was notified since employees at The Pet Hospital treated the sick kitten. Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement is working with Cabarrus County Animal Control on this case. 

The owner lives in Cabarrus County, officials said. They said this incident stresses the importance of having a valid vaccination for all of your pet's health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.
