Lancaster County Sheriff's Office investigating shooting

- The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left a man with serious injuries on Sunday.

Just before 7:00 p.m. deputies who were checking property on Great Falls Highway heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the Brooklyn Avenue area. The deputies notified dispatch and responded to the area.

Neighbors who also heard the gunshots directed deputies to the 900 block of 16th Street on the south side of Brooklyn Avenue.

The deputies found fired cartridge cases in the area, and were notified by dispatch that a resident of 16th Street found an injured man in his yard. Deputies responded and found a 21-year-old man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Lancaster County EMS arrived and began treating the victim. He was taken to Springs Memorial Hospital and later transferred to another medical facility for life-threatening injuries. Officials say the victim is still in the hospital. His condition is unknown.

Investigators worked through the night conducting interviews, but say they received very little information about what happened or why.

At this time in the investigation, it appears the victim was riding in a black 2002 Honda Accord which was shot at as it went down the 900 block of 16th Street.

The Accord was found abandoned at the intersection of West Brooklyn Avenue and Williams Estate Drive just before 7:30 p.m. Investigators say it contained evidence believed to be related to the shooting and was towed to the sheriff’s office for processing.

“We are talking with everybody we find out knows anything about this incident,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “This happened during daylight and many people were out and about. I have no doubt others out there saw what happened or know what happened. I encourage anyone with information about this case to call us. If you do not want to tell us who you are, you can remain anonymous. We need to get those responsible for this shooting into custody as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information about this case should call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 803-283-3388 or contact Midlands Crimestoppers at 888-274-6372.
