Local church running out of time to get school supplies for families in need

- New Outreach Christian Center's back to school bash is this coming Saturday but so far all that's been donated is a small box of supplies. In that box, one box of crayons, a few notebooks, two backpacks and a few packs of college ruled paper.

Pastor Brenda Stevenson told FOX 46 Charlotte the slow turn of donations is pretty unusual.

"Because normally when we have a need, the community always comes forth and helps us help the low income," Pastor Stevenson said.

In a little less than three days, more than 50 families are expected to turn out for the party.

For 21 years they've been collecting school supplies for low income families in the area but this is the first year that their stock has been this low. They are hoping for a miracle from the community.

Pastor Stevenson is asking the community to take action and help them get backpacks, pencils, and notebooks before Saturday.

From running summer programs for local kids to handing out more than a thousand turkeys at thanksgiving last year, they pride themselves in being a beacon of hope for those down on their luck.

Even gave FOX 46 Charlotte a watermelon before leaving.

"When you can touch peoples live that's a joy that only the holy spirit can give you," Pastor Sterling White.

"We want to give back, help a child. A youth go to school with the tools they need to be successful, attentive. We notice if they have what they need, there will be less classroom disruption and they'll stay focus," Pastor Stevenson said.

FOX 46 Charlotte is also taking action to help, calling local stores in the area to see what they can give before Saturday.

You can also donate to the Church on their gofundme page.

If you would like to donate supplies to the church their donation site is located at 3900 Gossett Avenue in Charlotte.
