A Gaston County man is facing murder charges after police say he assaulted another man resulting in his death.
Gaston County Police say officers were called to Carolinas Medical Center Lincoln on Nov. 10 in reference to a man who had been brought in with serious blunt force injuries stemming from an assault in the 100 block of Chum Road.
The victim, 22-year-old Garret Wade Abernathy, of Lincolnton, was transferred to CMC Main in Charlotte for treatment. Abernathy passed away as a result of his injuries on Nov. 11.
The suspect in the case, 29-year-old Scottie Lee Blanton, of Gastonia, was originally charged with one count of attempted murder and booked into the Gaston County Jail without bond. His charges have now been upgraded to one count of second degree murder, investigators said.
Blanton remains in the Gaston County Jail under $500,000 bond.
